The canton of St.Gallen with its regions and municipalities is making a virtue out of necessity: following the cancellation of the canton of Ticino at short notice, St.Gallen is presenting itself as a guest canton. Under the motto "Uf Bsuech dihei", the focus is on its own population.
The centerpiece of the presentation is the oversized green living room in Hall 9.1B. Visitors can get to know themselves and their homes in a new way. Fictitious windows provide a glimpse into the individual communities; videos tell moving stories of fellow human beings. Children can learn new things about their home in a scavenger hunt.
In the Sarganserland-Werdenberg region, a glance out of the window reveals one thing above all: diversity. On the doorstep is a natural paradise with lakes and mountains, but also shopping centers, industry and cultural sites.
The region is a versatile leisure paradise with a high quality of life and attractive living, working and educational opportunities: More information at www.rsw.ch.
The highlight of the guest appearance is the traditional OLMA parade on Saturday,
October 12. Over 1,500 people from all regions of the canton will stroll through the city center of St.Gallen and showcase the diversity and traditions of their homeland. Clubs, cultural institutions and culinary associations are currently working on over 50 different parade motifs.
The Sarganserland-Werdenberg region is participating with eight motifs. The parade will include the landmarks of Werdenberg Castle (TVO article on the preparations) and Sargans Castle, the Melser Alpabfahrt, which is unique in Switzerland, and traditional carnival groups. In addition, sculptures from Europe's largest open-air exhibition "Bad RagARTz" and a novelty from the Walensee boat company will make their way to St.Gallen.
So that the whole population can join in the celebrations, the outward and return journey by public transport for residents of the Canton of St.Gallen on OLMA Saturday is possible with a special ticket (here available here) free of charge.
The focus of the guest canton's appearance is on dialog. The government of the Canton of St.Gallen uses the opportunity to find out more about its population: What do you like and dislike about the canton? Even those not attending OLMA will be able to share their opinions on the website. All participants will be entered into a prize draw to win trips to special places in the canton with members of the government.
